City History Of Pickerington |
The first settlers arrived
in the attractive, growing community that is now Pickerington in 1808. and in 1815, Abraham Pickering laid out the original
plat of old Pickerington. 150 years later, relatively few people lived in the area. The village
slumbered as an agricultural and dairy community, seemingly distant and untouched by Lancaster, the county seat, and the State
Capital of Columbus. Growth and prosperity burst into Pickerington in 1965, changing the then-village
to a major city in northwest Fairfield County. Today's Pickerington is both a Columbus suburb
and a gateway leading to agricultural and open spaces to the east and southeast. Through it all, the City maintains its small-town
charm. As a result of reaching a population
of more than 5,000, the State of Ohio certified Pickerington as a City in 1991. Population figures for 1998 rest at approximately
8,000, according to the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission. The State of Ohio named Pickerington
the "Violet Capital of Ohio" in 1995. The Ohio
State Legislature officially designated Pickerington as the "Violet Capital of Ohio" in the summer of 1995, based on the efforts
of two Pickerington women: Jill Ann Sparks and Karen Wingler.
Wingler and Sparks, participants in the local LEADS class, had to complete a required project in order to graduate and decided
to make it their goal to get the City the official "Violet Capital" designation. The LEADS program is sponsored by the Pickerington
Area Chamber of Commerce and is a leadership development program. After much research and
effort, Sparks' and Wingler's work paid off, with Ohio Legislator's adopting resolutions in June 1995 honoring the City with
the official designation. Although the City only officially became the "Violet Capital of Ohio"
in 1995, residents as far back as the first settlers in 1808 have enjoyed the beauty and abundance of the wild violets that
grow everywhere in the area. In fact, that is the very reason why Violet Township, so named shortly after the first settlers
arrived and the township of which Pickerington is a part, was given that moniker. In the 1995
resolution, the Ohio House of Representatives noted that Pickerington has long-enjoyed the fruits of the "generous and civic-minded
population" of which Sparks' and Wingler's efforts are an example.
